R. Kelly’s attorneys play the race card

rkelly-mug-shot.jpgFourteen jurors have been empaneled in the R. Kelly case, the Chicago papers are reporting. Before that was over, one of his attorneys, Sam Adams, complained to the judge that the prosecution was using its peremptory challenges against black men.

Judge Vincent Gaughan dismissed the notion, noting that all the people Kelly’s lawyers had challenged were white, the Tribune reported:

Gaughan suggested the accusation was hypocritical, given the defense team used all seven of its challenges on white candidates.

“I don’t think [the prosecution] is doing that,” Gaughan said. “You keep saying that. You haven’t mentioned all the white males you’ve dismissed.”

Of the twelve main jurors, eight are white and four are black. Kelly is accused of an array of child pornography charges stemming from a videotape police say shows him performing a variety of sex acts on a girl alleged to be 13 or 14.

In other Kelly news, the Sun-Times reported that some of the potential jurors weren’t very nice to Kelly:

Kelly heard some tough words from potential jurors. A white woman, asked if she had formed an opinion of Kelly, wrote on her questionnaire, “Yes, he’s not very smart.”

Kelly looked up, a hurt expression on his face. Most of the time, Kelly has appeared not to be paying attention. The R&B superstar has appeared to be writing on yellow Post-it notes, then sticking the notes into his pockets.
