The theater director, the critic, and the blog discussion

Pretty funny symposium cum cat fight amongst a lot of the Chicago Reader’s tony theater critic corps, all stemming from a blog post about a phone call from theater heavyweight Robert Falls (artistic director of the Goodman) to a public radio host who’d disparaged a Broadway bound Goodman production.

Hitsville agrees with Albert Williams, but would also make the further point that it’s never smart for artists to call critics or even acknowledge their existence. It just gives them dinner-table conversation for years.

Eh, the way print media’s going, who’s gonna have a dinner table? Or dinner?

Bill I’d love to hear you weigh in- as a critic what do you think? Ever get an angry call from a musician?

By the way, WBEZ Dueling Critic Kelly Kleiman will be leading a discussion April 16 at Columbia College in Chicago with Kerry Reid, Martha Steketee and Alice Singleton about the challenges and opportunities they face as critics. The event is sponsored by the Association for Women Journalists-Chicago in cooperation with the Goodman Theater. More at http://www.awj-chicago.org/events.
